When her husband, Bülent Ecevit (1925-2006), was in prison and deprived of his political rights and his party banned in 1985, she set up the new party and lead it until he took over in 1987. He was Prime Minister 1974, 1977, 1978-79 and 1999-2002. In 2002 he became very ill, and was surrounded by his wife and advisors in the Prime Ministerial residence. (b. 1923-).
